When the engine combustion air is cold and therefore more dense, it contains more oxygen, which allows the combustion of the fuel to take place more efficiently. If the engine can draw its combustion air directly from outside, the performance of the engine will improve considerably, compared with having to draw its air from the - warm - engine room. The power rating of a modern marine diesel engine is mostly determined by 3 major permanent factors: air pressure of 100 kPa, air temperature of 300 Kelvin(K) (81F) and atmospheric humidity of 60%. If the air temperature is increased from 80F to 150F (338 K), the following formula applies:
