In order to burn 1 lb of fuel (ca. 0.14 U.S. gallon) a volume of 16 lbs of air is needed (ca. 438 cu. ft at 1 atmosphere).

 Each engine requires about 6,1 m3 (215 cu.ft) of air per kW (160 cu. ft/HP) per hour. For proper functioning, the velocity of the air taken in, should not be higher than 3 m/sec. (9.85 ft/sec). The design of the openings of the VETUS air suction vents has been based on this fact. Apart from the necessary air for combustion, each engine - and the more powerful ones in particular - also need air for dissipation of heat, radiated by the engine. The required quantity of this ventilation air is about the same as that of the combustion air, but it should furthermore be allowed to leave the engine room as well. Please, make sure of this when designing the engine room layout! The numbers of the models in the drawings indicate the horse power ratio for which these air vents have been developed. In other words, in the case of a twin engine installation of 60 HP each (120 HP in total), 2 louvered air suction vents type 60 can be chosen (1 x SB + 1 x Port), or 4 pcs. of the type 30 (2 x SB + 2 x Port). The profiles and the grill are of clear anodized aluminum. Each standard air vent may be provided with a plastic dorade box.
